“Just do it” was the unanimous recommendation at a topic day on new digital business models in production technology. The event was organized by VEMASinnovativ, the innovation association for mechanical engineering in Saxony, and the Mittelstand-Digital Zentrum Chemnitz. But how ready for change is the German mechanical engineering and toolmaking industry really?
The industry has been undergoing change for years. Industry 4.0 is not only changing production, but also the products themselves. In these fast-paced times, manufacturing companies need to create new structures in order to remain relevant in the market with their offerings. And so the speakers at the event encouraged all those who are looking towards new digital business models. “Think big and start small,” was the experts’ advice.
As one of the pioneers, Trumpf Sachsen AG reported on its approach to a new digital service business. The aim of the company from Neukirch/Saxony, which has around 500 employees, is to provide its customers with an end-to-end range of services, from development, consulting and software to support during the manufacturing process. During the panel discussion, project manager Andreas Hultsch answered numerous questions from the audience.
The feasibility and hurdles of new digital business models were then discussed further in smaller workshop rounds. It became clear that innovative companies are sometimes thwarted by their own customers, for example when there are questions about data security or the use of user data. “Many fear that company secrets could be disclosed,” said one participant. A great deal of sensitivity and clarification is required to dispel concerns. iSAX Managing Director Heike Vocke explained how projects can be successfully implemented using practical examples from customers.
All in all, the company representatives present were confident about new digital business models, knowing well that there is still a long way to go.
